授業の題目 Language and Society: Pragmatics
学修の概要 Through this course we will consider the interaction of different types of language, language users, and situations. Students will be able to prepare teaching materials, use them to teach in another class, then write a long report about this experience.

授業計画 第1回 What is pragmatics? (Activity 1)
Students will be able to analyse "By the way, there's no paper in the copy machine." and other examples and references together.
第2回 Pragmatics and sociolinguistics (Activity 2)
Students will be able to consider dialect use or not, accommodation.
第3回 Pragmatics: Grice and Implicature (Activity 3)
Students will be able to understand how we break rules to make sense.
第4回 Pragmatics: Face threatening acts (Activity 4)
Students will be able to consider cultural differences: When do we disagree, express different opinions or ideas?
第5回 Pragmatics: Pragmatics and language education (Students will be able to choose a teaching activity and plan research)
Finding and using references.
第6回 Pragmatics: Textbooks, activities (Preparing to teach / Piloting research)
Giving feedback - Students will be able to participate in a sample teaching and research project.
第7回 Pragmatics: Students will be able to do teaching practice in the class (Teaching / Research report details)

授業外学習の課題 Finding and using references, writing and planning an essay, teaching to another class, and writing a long teaching report.
2-4 hours per week.
履修上の注意事項 【対面授業を実施します】
We will have classes face to face, but will also use Google Classroom, Google Documents and other online tools for any on-demand classes.


英語英文学科で提供している科目については、公認欠席を含め、欠席はいかなる事情があっても4回までとします。For any authorized absences (公認欠席), assignments will be provided.
If possible, contact your teacher in advance if you will be absent.
成績評価の方法・基準 Evaluation will be based on written work (50%), oral reports and presentations (25%). Attendance and attitude in class will also affect students' grades (25%). Feedback will be given every step of the way!
テキスト No textbook, but reference to many different publications.
参考文献 Pragtivities: Bringing Pragmatics to Second Language Classrooms (will be distributed in class)
Before the course starts, read a book, paper, or chapter in Japanese on Pragmatics. This will help you understand and participate more fully in this course.
