授業の題目 Discussion and Debate
学修の概要 This course is designed to improve the English listening, speaking, and discussion skills of students. The focus in the second semester moves from everyday conversation to structured argument and debate, exploring skills such as agreeing, disagreeing and critical thinking.
学修の到達目標 The aim of this course is to develop students' abilities to actively join in discussions and conversations.
1. To improve general English speaking and listening skills.
2. To improve interpersonal and strategic language skills.
3. To develop self-expression skills.
授業計画 第1回 Course Introduction and Study Skills
第2回 Introducing Debate - Exploring the goals and structure of debate.
第3回 Types of Reason - Understanding how to use different types of reason to suit different types of argument.
第4回 Debate Practice 1 - Debating everyday issues
第5回 Making an Argument - Understanding how to propose an argument.
第6回 Challenging an Argument - Understanding how to challenge an argument.
第7回 Debate Practice 2 - Debating local issues.
第8回 Language for Debate 1 - Introducing formal language for stating an argument.
第9回 Mid-Term Formal Debate
第10回 Language for Debate 2 - Introducing formal language for challenging an argument.
第11回 Debate Practice 3 - Debating global issues
第12回 Debate Practice 4 – Debating students' choice of topic (1)
第13回 Debate Practice 5 – Debating students' choice of topic (2)
第14回 Course Review and Formal Debate Practice

授業外学習の課題 Students are expected to study for around four hours per week out of class.
1) Two hours should be spent previewing the material for the next class (e.g. handouts, internet research).
2) Two hours should be spent reviewing notes and materials from the previous class
履修上の注意事項 英語英文学科で提供している科目については、公認欠席を含め、欠席はいかなる事情があっても4回までとします。
For courses offered in the Department of English, absences are strictly limited to 4 times per semester for any reason, including authorized absences.

公認欠席について: Individual instruction will be provided for students with authorized absences.
成績評価の方法・基準 The grade for the semester is composed of:
Active participation, 30%; Homework assignments, 20%; Final assessment, 50%.
*If a student is absent from a class, it is the student's responsibility to contact a classmate or the teacher to find out about the classwork/homework.
テキスト No textbook is required. Materials will be provided in class and through Google Classroom.
