授業の題目 Basic introduction to speaking and listening (oral communication) in English.
学修の概要 There will be a variety of speaking and listening activities from the textbook and outside the textbook: pair work, listening dictations, games, group presentations and teacher lectures using PowerPoint. There will be mini-tests to review key language patterns including presentations using PowerPoint on topics of interest to the student. Google Classroom will be relied on for feedback and to provide supplementary material to support what is being learned in the textbook. The textbook units are very short with clear targets, so in the 90 minute class we can do two units.
学修の到達目標 The goal is to build confidence with oral English skills, with a special emphasis on improving students listening to natural speed English, and producing grammatically appropriate responses to questions in English.
授業計画 第1回 Self-introductions; introduction to the course; explanation of the syllabus. Fill out information cards. Simple dictation on greetings.
第2回 Unit 1 Talking about one's home. Present tense descriptions; mini dictation and pronunciation practice.
第3回 Unit 2 telling a short true story; dictation; group pair work telling stories. Homework: write a true short story and submit to Google Classroom.
第4回 Review Unit 3 talking about another country. Instruction on how make a good presentation. Unit 4: food culture; gap fills about food vocabulary. Understanding main ideas exercise.
第5回 Unit 5 Paying for things; money and shopping vocabulary. Unit 6 Pre-reading and listening. Review (speaking) of all previous lesson key patterns.
第6回 Student presentations: Country reports (assigned by the instructor in lesson #3)- PowerPoint- Q&A on presentations.
第7回 Units 6 and 7 paired- listening and dictation; understanding sequence. Simple past sentence writing. Pair work on the various themes of these two units.
第8回 Unit 8 Using quotations (Who said what and when); Unit 9 more understanding dialogue- Discussion in pairs: dinner time. Food vocabulary dictation.
第9回 Unit 10 talking about clothing, styles; vocabulary practice with dictation; Unit 11 taling about dogs from many different angles. homework: pre-reading of Unit 12
第10回 Unit 12 Talking about airplanes and flying. Intensive listening with dictation. Short writing and group discussion. Unit 13 on waste/garbage disposal. comprehension questions of main ideas for audio/listening.
第11回 Unit 14 Taking public transportation. listen to and retelling a story. Discussion: getting directions, getting lost.
第12回 Unit 15 restaurant English. Error correction exercise. Unit 16 imagination and brain storming in English. Mini-test on previously learned vocabulary.
第13回 Unit 17; talking about housework. Unit 18 continuing with food vocabulary and cooking vocabulary and expressions. Getting information from a story- catching the meaning of new words from context.
第14回 Unit 19 Longer reading and vocabulary challenge (quiz); identifying the main idea in a story. More discussion, free speaking on living in a house: what is your dream home.
第15回 Unit 20 Talking about cultural customs. Review for final exam: dictation and practice quiz.
授業外学習の課題 4 hours a week outside study including listening with the audio download; presentations using PowerPoint; online quizzes, short essay

– Course materials for students with authorized absences will be shared via Google Classroom/Moodle or other platforms at a later date.
