| 学修の概要 | リーディング・ライティング（文字によるインプット・アウトプット）を中心に基本的な英語コミュニケーション能力を身につけることを目的とします。英語の基礎的な読解力・ライティング力を習得するためのクラスです。やさしい英語で書かれた読み物からはじめ、徐々にレベルアップしていき、高校までに学んだ単語、熟語、文法を復習しながら、教材中に出てきた表現をアウトプット活動につなぐことも視野に入れて学びます。 |
| 学修の到達目標 | 受講生の英語習熟度を考慮しつつ、リーディング(R)・ライティング(W)に必要な語彙力、文法力を向上させることを目指します。各レベルの到達目標の目安は以下の通りです。 レベル1a:(R)日常生活で使われる短く簡単な指示を読み、理解することができる。(W)住所・氏名・職業（自分の学部/学科などを含む）の項目を埋めることができる。 レベル1b:(R)日常生活で使われる馴染みのある語句や単純で短い簡単な文章（ポスターや招待状等）を読み、理解することができる。(W)身近なこと（好き嫌い、家族、学校生活など）について短い文章を書くことができる。 レベル1c:(R)挿絵のある短い物語を理解することができる。(W)自分の経験について、辞書などを参照して短い文章を書くことができる。 レベル2：(R)英語学習者用の短い物語や伝記などを理解することができる。(W)日常的・個人的な内容であれば、招待状、私的な手紙、メモ、メッセージなどを簡単な英語で書くことができる。 レベル3：(R)簡単な語を用いて書かれていれば、実用的・具体的な内容（旅行ガイドブック、レシピ、列車やバスのスケジュールなど）を読み取ったり、必要な情報を探したりすることができる。(W)身の回りのできごとや趣味、場所、仕事などについて、個人的経験や自分に直接必要のある内容であれば、簡単な描写ができる。 |
| 授業計画 | 第１回 | Introduction: students will gain an understanding of the overall aims and contents of the course, will become acquainted with the class rules and what is expected of them, and will participate in some communicative introductory activities in order to get to know class members ("find someone who..." activity, general knowledge quiz, etc). |
| 第２回 | Unit 1 : Green Spaces (Part 1). In this unit students will learn about the importance of green spaces in urban areas. After learning / reviewing some relevant vocabulary, we will read a text about a green space in New York ('The High Line') and practice the skill of identifying and noting down main ideas and details. Students will then learn how to make inferences (educated guesses) about things that are not directly stated in texts. Students will discuss in pairs what they think about 'The High Line.' | |
| 第３回 | Unit 1 : Green Spaces (Part 2) Students will practice guessing the contents of a text from the title alone. We will then read a text about another green space (Milan's 'Vertical Forest'), before learning about how to take notes with underlining and highlighting. Students will practice how to identify the topic of a reading. Students will then compare the two readings about green spaces and learn how to synthesize the information. | |
| 第４回 | Unit 1 : Green Spaces (Part 3). Students will review the new vocabulary from the unit and refresh their knowledge about the use of the simple present forms of 'be' and 'have.' After focusing on basic sentence structure and how to connect ideas with 'and' and 'but,' students will write a paragraph about a green space they know. | |
| 第５回 | Unit 2 : Art (Part 1). Students will learn about the popular art of Keith Haring. After studying general vocabulary covering the topic of art, students will identify key points from a timeline of the life of Keith Haring. In Reading 1, students will note down the main ideas and details of the text as the read an interview concerning Haring. Students will then discuss their personal opinions about his art after seeing some examples. | |
| 第６回 | Unit 2 : Art (Part 2) - Students will learn how to use short forms of numbers when taking notes, before reading a second text about Keith Haring and identifying the significance of the numbers in the text. Students will then connect the two readings on the artist and learn to identify the ideas behind four of his pictures. | |
| 第７回 | Unit 2 : Art (Part 3) - Students will review the new vocabulary from the unit and study the different forms words can take (example: energy (noun), energetic (adjective), energize (verb). After reviewing the past tense of 'be' and 'have,' students will learn about biography paragraphs and look at the importance of time order, before writing a biography paragraph on the artist of their choice. | |
| 第８回 | Midterm Test - We will look at some of the common mistakes Japanese students make in writing English, before taking a 30 minute written test based on the topics of Units 1 and 2 of the textbook (green spaces and art). | |
| 第９回 | Unit 3 : Special Possessions (Part 1) Students will learn and write about the topic of antiques, collecting as a hobby, and items that are precious to them. After learning some relevant vocabulary, students will note down the main ideas and details as we read a text about a sports reporter who has a passion for the TV show 'Antiques Roadshow.' Students will discuss why they think shows such as this are popular, using information from the reading and their own opinions / ideas. | |
| 第１０回 | Unit 3 : Special Possessions (Part 2) - Students will learn how to use bullet points to note main ideas as they read. They will practice this when reading a text about collecting items. Students will learn to identify suggestions from imperative forms in the text. Students will then connect the two readings from the unit and synthesize their findings. | |
| 第１１回 | Unit 3 : Special Possessions (Part 3) After a review of the vocabulary from the unit, we will refresh our knowledge of using the present simple for everyday actions and facts. Students will be introduced to the idea of a paragraph containing a topic sentence and a number of supporting sentences (main idea / details). Students will choose an important possession of theirs and write a paragraph about it. | |
| 第１２回 | Unit 4 : Open for Business (Part 1) We will contrast big chain stores with small local ones. Students will study some new vocabulary for the topic. They will work in pairs to think of the good and bad points of both types of shop. Students will then read and take notes on a text featuring a debate about the merits of both store types, and learn how to identify emotion when not directly stated. Students will then discuss in pairs their own feelings about the two store types. | |
| 第１３回 | Unit 4 : Open for Business (Part 2). Students will learn how to group items when taking notes using 'e.g.' We will then read and take notes about the online craft store 'etsy.com,' before connection the two readings from the unit and listing the benefits of all three store types (chain, local, online). Students will then make a short business plan for an imaginary store and present their ideas to the class. | |
| 第１４回 | Unit 4 : Open for Business (Part 3) - we will review the vocabulary from the unit, then discuss the use of 'gerunds' and 'there is / there are.' Students will then interview a partner about their neighbourhood to practice description. Finally, they will choose a physical shop they are familiar with and write a descriptive paragraph about it, making sure to use adjectives. | |
| 第１５回 | Review of textbook Units 1-4 (Topics : Green Spaces, Art, Special Possessions, Open for Business); students will brainstorm their knowledge of the four topics and write questions for each other to answer. We will also prepare for the final exam by a further look at the most common mistakes Japanese students make in written English and how to avoid them, as well as other tips for exam success such as time management. |
| 授業外学習の課題 | Students will be assigned independent reading and writing tasks for homework. Students will choose an English reader and write a summary together with their opinions of it. Students are required to complete a total of 60 minutes of prior and post-work per class : they should spent 30 minutes after each class reviewing the main points covered, and a further 30 minutes before the next class looking ahead at the next pages of the textbook, checking any unfamiliar vocabulary and familiarizing themselves with the topic and tasks they will be expected to do. |

| 成績評価の方法・基準 | リーディング・プロジェクト(15～20%)、ライティング課題(15～20%）、小・中間・ユニットテスト（①15～20％）、期末テスト（②10～40％）、参加度（～10％）を原則とします。（ただし①と②の合計は50%以下）この他、宿題（～10%）をリーディング・ライティングプロジェクトの一部として課すこともあります。上記に加えて、TOEIC, TOEIC Bridge のスコア等を加味する場合があります。 |
