授業の題目 English for Current Affairs
学修の概要 This course aims to develop students' ability to comprehend and respond critically to English language media. Authentic (or authentic-like) items from online/TV news will be used to develop students' listening comprehension skills.
学修の到達目標 While providing students with a knowledge of journalistic English, the course will also help develop the ability to:
- understand the gist of a news report
- extract factual information from a news report
- distinguish between fact & opinion
- follow the sequence of reported events
- make a brief oral/written summary of a news item
- recognize characteristic features of broadcast news English
授業計画 第1回 Course introduction
Text Lesson 1: Energy-efficient house
- Students will
- expand their vocabulary related to environmental issues, energy use and scientific research
- practice reading graphs in English
- recognize credible sources of information
第2回 Text Lesson 2: Ex-racehorses provide comfort to children in need
- Students will
- expand their vocabulary related to health treatments for learning development issues
- practice reading bar graphs
- learn how journals and other periodicals are cited
第3回 Text Lesson 3: Repeal of logging ban divides Kenya
- Students will
- expand their vocabulary related to environmental issues, particularly resource management
- recognize opinion in a news story

Students are expected to study for 3 to 4 hours per week out of class.
1) At least 1.5 hours should be spent previewing the material for the next class (e.g. textbook, handouts, internet research).
2) At least 1.5 hours should be spent reviewing notes and materials from the previous class.

We will have classes face to face, but will also use Moodle and other online tools for any online study.

Absences, including authorized absences (公認欠席), are strictly limited to no more than 5 times per semester. 公認欠席について: Individual instruction will be provided for students with authorized absences.
