学修の概要 This is an English discussion class that is largely student led with teacher support. Students will be free to choose topics and discuss them with their teacher and classmates in a casual setting.
これは、主に学生が主体となり、教師のサポートを受けながら進める英語ディスカッションクラスです。学生は自由にトピックを選び、カジュアルな雰囲気の中で教師やクラスメイトとディスカッションします。
学修の到達目標 The goals of this class are to develop student confidence in English discussion by providing a safe and causal space to speak English as well as the freedom to choose topics of conversation based on individual student's interests.
このクラスの目標は、安全で気楽な英語の会話の場と、個々の生徒の興味に基づいて会話のトピックを自由に選択できる環境を提供することで、学生の英語でのディスカッションに対する自信を育むことです。
授業計画 第1回 -Class, teacher, and student introductions. Students will have a chance to get to know the teacher and each other, and they will explore the class themes through games and question prompts provided by the teacher. All this is to help the students decide if this class is the right fit for them or not.
第2回 -Class rules and expectations. As a class, we will go through the class syllabus to ensure everyone understands what is expected in this class. This will help students prepare for the rest of the semester.
第3回 -Example Discussion Led By The Teacher: The teacher will choose a topic before class and prepare questions and discussion prompts for the class. This is meant to show the students what they are meant to do when it's their turn to lead discussions. Student(s) will be randomly chosen to lead the discussions in the next class and their homework will be to prepare for that.
第4回 -Student Led Discussion Round 1: The chosen student(s) will come to class prepared to present a topic for the class to discuss, including questions and prompts. The teacher and the other students will all participate. Another student(s) will be randomly chosen to lead discussions in the next class and their homework will be to prepare for that.

第7回 -Round 1 Feedback Day: The teacher will give feedback to each of the students based on how well prepared they were for their discussions. As a class, we will discuss what went well and how we can do better. The teacher will lead another example discussion, demonstrating these points. For round 2, student(s) will be randomly chosen to lead the discussions in the next class and their homework will be to prepare for that.

第12回 -Presentation Preparation Day 1: The teacher will explain the rules and expectations for the presentations and then the students will start to prepare for their presentations. The students must choose a discussion topic from earlier in the semester to present on. For homework, students will write out a rough draft of their presentation.
第13回 -Presentation Preparation Day 2: In class, students will continue to prepare for the presentations. The teacher will go over the rough drafts and make recommendations. Homework is to prepare for the presentation.
第14回 -Presentation Day: Students will present their topics with a slide show, in front of the class. This presentation will demonstrate what topic made the biggest impression on each student and how in depth they can explain it in English.
第15回 -Semester Review Day: The teacher will give feedback on the presentations and the class will review the semester together. This will be a chance for general feedback from both the teacher to the students and the students to the teacher.
授業外学習の課題 15 English reflection sentences, 1 sentence due at the end of every class. 2 student led discussions. 1 presentation. Participation in all classmate's student led discussions.
履修上の注意事項 *If a student misses five classes, they will be automatically removed from the class. Individual instruction will be provided for students with authorized absences.* *Students should spend 3-4 hours preparing for class every week*
To be successful on this course, students need:
1) good attendance and time keeping.
2) good classwork and homework.

成績評価の方法・基準 Class participation, including both in and out of class weekly assignments, (40%~50%). Main graded assignment, meaning the 3 debates, (30%~40%). Small quizzes covering the topics, (10%~20%). 授業内外の毎週の課題を含む授業参加度(40%~50%)。主な採点課題、つまり3つの討論会、(30%~40%)。トピックに関する小クイズ(10%~20%)。
