| 授業の題目 | This course aims to help students develop the skills and linguistic resources necessary to discuss current events in English. There is a particular focus on world news seen from a global perspective. |
| 学修の概要 | There is no textbook for this course. Students will engage with news content on a wide variety of topics in English, through listening, watching videos, and reading. They will develop the necessary skills to understand this content and discuss it intelligently. They will also engage in active learning, investigating English news each week and reporting back to their group the following week. Finally, they will develop their presentation skills, delivering two presentations, one in the middle of the course and one at the end, in the style of a news report. |
| 学修の到達目標 | The course will develop the four English language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), as well as the critical thinking skills necessary to interpret news media and the pragmatic skills necessary to express opinions about it and discuss it meaningfully. |
| 授業計画 | 第１回 | Introduction to basic news vocabulary and simple sentence structures for describing global happenings. Discuss easy ways to find international news online. |
| 第２回 | Focus on political events, practising words for leaders and conflicts. | |
| 第３回 | Explore environmental news, using simple language to talk about weather and climate changes. | |
| 第４回 | Technology updates, learning verbs for innovation and future predictions in short articles. | |
| 第５回 | Health and pandemic reports, practising questions about causes and effects. NOTE: This class will be on Saturday. It will also be on demand, so you can complete it from home and there is not need to come onto the campus. |

| 授業外学習の課題 | There will be two presentations, one in the middle of the semester and one at the end. In addition, each week students will have to research a news topic of their choice, related to the topic discussed in class, and make a mini-presentation of this to their group. |
