| 授業の題目 | Business English II |
| 学修の概要 | This course aims to provide students with basic practical business English skills for real-world contexts. As well as studying aspects of grammar and vocabulary necessary for international business communication, students will take part in pair- and group- work, discussions, complete class assignments and give occasional presentations with a view to becoming familiar with the norms of global business interactions. |
| 学修の到達目標 | The aims of this class are to provide the students with basic familiarity and competence in introductory business English forms of communication. All four skills will be covered, although there will be an emphasis on speaking. On completing the class students will be able to give advice on work-related problems, take part in business discussions, talk about future business plans, take part in job interviewing and be able to write basic business emails and letters. (See the class plan below for more details). |
| 授業計画 | 第1回 | Introduction: students will gain an understanding of the overall aims and contents of the course, will become acquainted with the class rules and what is expected of them, and will participate in some communicative introductory activities in order to get to know class members ("find someone who..." activity, general knowledge quiz, etc). |
| 第2回 | Unit 7 - People (Part 1). Students will learn to discuss work preferences; they will review the past simple tense in order to extract information from worker profiles. Students will answer questions about the CEO of Avon Cosmetics after reading a profile article. | |
| 第3回 | Unit 7 - People (Part 2). Students will read an article about Steve Jobs and extract information about his career. We will discuss the best ways to deal with problems at work and listen to a conversation about problem resolution. Students will practice giving advice on how to solve specific work problems. | |
| 第4回 | Unit 8 - Advertising (Part 1). Students will talk about their favourite advertisements and think about what makes them effective. We will read an article about a famous Volkswagen advertisement and watch it on YouTube, before discussing its merits and effectiveness. Students will study information regarding three car models and work together to match them to three individuals with varying needs. | |
| 第5回 | Unit 8 - Advertising (Part 2). Students will answer comprehension questions on an interview with a business person about their least favourite advertisement. Students will learn how to use 'much / a lot / a little / a bit' for evaluating data on advertising spending and for comparing products. Role play : students will work together to come up with an advertising campaign plan for a luxury chocolate product. | |
| 第6回 | Unit 9 - Companies (Part 1). Students will discuss what various global companies are known for, and read a company profile. We will study the use of the present continuous tense to talk about temporary situations / actions / develoments / changes, with particular regard to describing company activities. | |
| 第7回 | Unit 9 - Companies (Part 2). Students will role play showing visitors around a company, using the present and present continuous tenses to give a guided tour based on information cards with company data. Students will learn how to give a presentation introducing their company. | |
| 第8回 | Review of Units 7-9 : Students will review the three units we have looked at thus far, brainstorm the key points together, and devise questions for their peers in order to reinforce knowledge of the material. | |
| 第9回 | Unit 10 - Communication (part 1). Students will brainstorm and discuss various methods of communication, in prticular those used within companies. Students will learn about the various methods of networking in business. We will study how to talk about future plans and read about how a top CEO communicates. | |
| 第10回 | Unit 10 - Communication (part 2). We will study the use of 'will' for both future plans and predictions before applying this to our personal lives as well as companies. Students will practice making predictions about future products. Role play : Students will work together to decide how to cut their company's workforce and present their conclusions to the class. | |
| 第11回 | Unit 11 - Cultures (Part 1). Students will brainstorm what companies need to do before starting up in a foreign country. We will learn about different company cultures and consider how to avoid cultural mistakes when abroad using 'should / shouldn't.' | |
| 第12回 | Unit 11 - Cultures (Part 2). We will learn about the difference in work culture between China and Brazil. Students will practice using 'could / would' to make requests in business-related situations. Students will answer questions after hearing a conversation highlighting cultural differences. | |
| 第13回 | Unit 12 - Jobs (Part 1). Students will decide which jobs should get the highest salaries and present their reasons to the class. Students will look at some job advertisements and learn about the kind of vocabulary they use. They will practice using the present perfect tense in a job interview situation. | |
| 第14回 | Unit 12 – Jobs (Part 2). Students will become familiar with CVs / résumés and practice using the past simple and present perfect tenses to describe completed events in the past and past actions that are continuing into the present. Role play : students will learn how to interview for jobs in a multinational company. | |
| 第15回 | Review of Units 10-12 : Students will revisit units 10-12 of the book, brainstorm the key points together, and devise questions for their peers in order to reinforce knowledge of the material. |
| 授業外学習の課題 | Written homework will be assigned (graded). Students should also expand and review upon what they have learned in each class by using the additional video material that comes with the textbook DVD (not graded). In the case of a 2-credit lecture course with 15 (90-minute) lessons per semester, students are required to complete a total of 60 minutes of prior and post-work per class : they should spent 30 minutes after each class reviewing the main points covered, and a further 30 minutes before the next class looking ahead at the next pages of the textbook, checking any unfamiliar vocabulary and familiarizing themselves with the topic and tasks they will be expected to do. |
| 履修上の注意事項 | Students will be expected to : (1) attend class regularly and arrive in a timely manner. (2) participate actively in class during pair- and group-work, as well as in role plays and other communicative activities.
