| 学修の概要 | This course will introduce students to practical business English which will be of use in actual work situations. Students will learn and practice the kind of English vocabulary and expressions used for business interactions in a global context. Using pair- and group- work, discussions, class assignments and occasional presentations, students will get to know how to express themselves using the norms of international business communication. |
| 学修の到達目標 | The aims of this class are to provide the students with basic familiarity and competence in introductory business English forms of communication. All four skills will be covered, although there will be an emphasis on speaking. On completing the class students will be able to introduce themselves, talk about and evaluate jobs, workplaces and companies, talk on the telephone, talk about work-related problems, deal with customers / clients, describe and evaluate products and make travel arrangements. (See the class plan below for more details). |
| 授業計画 | 第1回 | Introduction: students will gain an understanding of the overall aims and contents of the course, will become acquainted with the class rules and what is expected of them, and will participate in some communicative introductory activities in order to get to know class members ("find someone who..." activity, general knowledge quiz, etc). |
| 第2回 | Unit 1 – Introductions. Students will learn how to introduce themselves, how to talk about nationalities and how to use 'to be' for describing people. Students will read and take notes about the profile of a prominent CEO. | |
| 第3回 | Unit 1 - Introductions (Part 2). Students will practice introducing themselves, then write a paragraph on their partner's introduction. Students will listen to a dialogue featuring business introductions and answer a range of questions about it. Students will role play in pairs / groups a situation where they must evaluate the merits of job applicants before choosing the best one. | |
| 第4回 | Unit 2 – Work and Leisure (Part 1). Students will discuss what people want from their jobs. Students will study prepositions for time phrases in order to talk about schedules and busiest times of the year at university and at work. Students will read about the schedule CEO of a software security firm and discuss the difference between formal and informal work environments. | |
| 第5回 | Unit 2 - Work and Leisure (Part 2). Students will discuss their own leisure activities before listening to and answering comprehension questions about a business person talking about work and free time. Students will learn how to use adverbs of frequency to describe schedules. They will role play being Human Resources staff interviewing workers to ascertain what they like / don't like about the job. | |
| 第6回 | Unit 3 - Problems (Part 1). We will discuss what problems workers might have using the words 'too / enough,' then answer questions after reading a text about the complaints of workers in a call centre. Students will learn to use 'have / some / any' in relation to work problems. | |
| 第7回 | Unit 3 – Problems (Part 2). Students will learn how to introduce themselves on the telephone and clarify information. In a case study on a luxury apartments company, students will listen to customers' complaints and determine the difference between the product as advertised, and the reality of customer experiences. | |
| 第8回 | Review of Units 1-3 : Students will review the first three units of the book, brainstorm the key points together, and devise questions for their peers in order to reinforce knowledge of the material. | |
| 第9回 | Unit 4 - Travel (Part 1). Students will talk about what they like / don't like about travel and learn the necessary vocabulary relevant to business travel. Students will answer a range of questions after listening to a business person talking about their travel. experiences. | |
| 第10回 | Unit 4 - Travel (Part 2). Students will brainstorm the kind of hotel facilities needed by business travelers. We will study the use of 'there is / there are' before using it to identify key points in an article about a major Tokyo hotel. Students will role play a situation in which they have to manage multiple clients wanting to book a conference centre for the same period (students will practice evaluating information and working together to find solutions). | |
| 第11回 | Unit 5 - Food and Entertaining (Part 1). Students will learn the adjective forms of country names in order to discuss the cuisine from various nations. Students will learn categories of food and vocabulary / culture notes pertaining to restaurants. Students will read a text and find out about the cultural differences companies like McDonalds have to take into account in their global business. | |
| 第12回 | Unit 5 - Food and Entertaining (Part 2). Students will learn the use of 'some / any' and the difference between countable and uncountable nouns with special reference to food / dining. Role play : Students will work together to decide which of three restaurants would be the best for entertaining foreign business clients. | |
| 第13回 | Unit 6 - Buying and Selling (Part 1). Students will discuss where they buy various products. We will look at an online advertisement to learn the kind of phrases commonly used to attract customers. Students will learn how to read and write large numbers, then study an article about UNIQLO before extracting numerical information. Students will brainstorm what they think makes a business successful. | |
| 第14回 | Unit 6 - Buying and Selling (Part 2). Students will read a car rental advertisement about and extract information about what it promises. Students will listen to a business person talk about what makes good sales staff and the common mistakes made in this area; students will relate their own work experiences (if any). Role play : students in a pair or group will study information about three products before choosing the best one for their company to sell. | |
| 第15回 | Review of Units 4-6 : Students will revisit units 4-6 of the book, brainstorm the key points together, and devise questions for their peers in order to reinforce knowledge of the material. |
| 授業外学習の課題 | Written homework will be assigned (graded). Students should also expand and review upon what they have learned in each class by using the additional video material that comes with the textbook DVD (not graded). In the case of a 2-credit lecture course with 15 (90-minute) lessons per semester, students are required to complete a total of 60 minutes of prior and post-work per class : they should spent 30 minutes after each class reviewing the main points covered, and a further 30 minutes before the next class looking ahead at the next pages of the textbook, checking any unfamiliar vocabulary and familiarizing themselves with the topic and tasks they will be expected to do. |

(2) participate actively in class during pair- and group-work, as well as in role plays and other communicative activities.
