授業の題目 言語文化研究Ⅱ (American Culture through Literature)
学修の概要 In this class, we will watch a movie called Freedom Writers and read most of the screenplay while working our way through a textbook, in order to help students maintain and improve their current level of English.

If possible, we will also watch movies related to the same theme as Freedom Writers (Disadvantaged Students and Inspirational Teachers/Coaches), which will help students better understand American culture. This course should be of special interest to students who hope to become teachers in the future.
学修の到達目標 At the end of this course, students will be:

(1) More confident in their English skills (all four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening)

(2) More familiar with several films about American society and about the theme of education

(3) More familiar with self-study techniques (to become independent learners)

(4) Better prepared for their seminar (zemi) and thesis research.
授業計画 第1回 Week 1: Introduction & Orientation; course expectations; textbook Unit 1 (with scenes from Freedom Writers, each week); begin the first movie, Lean on Me (part 1). Students will learn about the characters and setting of the film and consider multicultural American society.
第2回 Week 2: Textbook Unit 2; continue Lean on Me (part 2). Students will learn more about the students in the classroom, their teacher and her home life (husband, father), and colleagues (coworkers), deepening their understanding of American society.
第3回 Week 3: Textbook Unit 3; continue Lean on Me (part 3). Students will consider the role of parental expectations in life.
第4回 Week 4: Textbook Unit 4; continue Lean on Me (part 4). Students will consider the lives of ethnic or racial minorities and their language (dialect).
第5回 Week 5: Textbook Unit 5; continue Lean on Me (part 5). Students will consider the impact of bullying and racial hatred while learning about the Nazi terror.
第6回 Week 6: Textbook Unit 6; continue Lean on Me (part 6). Students will continue learning about racial discrimination and prejudice and how this impacts our lives.
第7回 Week 7: Textbook Unit 7; finish Lean on Me (part 7); Response Paper #1 due (on Lean on Me) due next week. Students will learn about the reality of life for ethnic or racial minorities in the US (as well as poverty and gun violence).
第8回 Week 8: Response Paper # 1 due; midterm textbook check; textbook Unit 8; begin McFarland USA (part 1). Students will consider ways of improving education.
第9回 Week 9: Textbook Unit 9; continue McFarland USA (part 2). Students will learn about the Holocaust and how it is taught in the US (reflecting on the Atomic Bombing in Hiroshima).
第10回 Week 10: Textbook Unit 10; continue McFarland USA (part 3). Students will consider the issue of homelessness, poverty, and young carers.
第11回 Week 11: Textbook Unit 11; continue McFarland USA (part 4). Students will consider work-life balance and the impact of work on one's home life.
第12回 Week 12: Textbook Unit 12; continue McFarland USA (part 5). Students will consider the impact of survivor testimony and learning from history.
第13回 Week 13: Textbook Unit 13; continue McFarland USA (part 6). Students will consider the importance of truth and justice.
第14回 Week 14 (On-demand class this week [オンデマンド授業]): Textbook Unit 14; finish McFarland USA (part 7): Response Paper #2 (on McFarland USA) due next week. Students will consider the causes and impact of divorce.
第15回 Week 15: Textbook Units 15 & 16; final textbook check; Response Paper #2 due; Course Summary & Evaluations. Students will consider whether Erin's approach to education is possible to reproduce or not.
授業外学習の課題 Students are expected to study for around four hours per week out of class.
1) Two hours should be spent previewing the material for the next class (e.g. textbook, handouts, internet research).
2) Two hours should be spent reviewing notes and materials from the previous class.

In addition, students will be asked to read each week, complete discussion activities in class, and then write and submit a short response paper to each week's scenes/theme.
履修上の注意事項 【対面授業を実施します】

Sleeping in class or coming to class unprepared is unacceptable. Have a positive attitude toward learning and do your best each week. Students will need to use a good bilingual dictionary during the class.

英語英文学科で提供している科目については、公認欠席を含め、欠席はいかなる事情があっても4回までとします。
("For courses offered in the Department of English, absences are strictly limited to 4 times per semester for any reason, including authorized absences.")

As a general rule, credits will not be granted if a student is absent more than 4 times.
In addition, contact needs to be made in advance of any absences.

公認欠席について: Individual instruction will be provided for students with authorized absences.
成績評価の方法・基準 (1) Active Participation, including timely submission of all work = 25%
(2) Online Activities (using Google Classroom) = 25%
(3) Response Papers (1 & 2) = 25%
(4) Vocabulary Quizzes = 25%

*Minus Points for Poor Attitude (sleeping in class, etc.) or Unexcused Absences
*Coming to class late 2 times = 1 absence
