学修の概要 | English Communication II is designed to guide to build upon what students learned in English Communication I. This course aims more to focus on students writing and speaking. In English Communication II, we will also continue to think out side of the box and expand our understanding related to culture, stereotypes, and communication. |
学修の到達目標 | Students will be expected to actively participate during class discussions, ask questions, and keenly work on improving their communication skills. The overall aim of this course is to build on the first two semesters to get students to think more on their feet, and be able to communicate in different mediums in English. |
授業計画 | 第1回 | Orientation to English Communication 2 and Ice Breaker [Introduction to the second half of the course] - discuss what has been covered in terms 1 and 2 - and have new students mix and interact with each other. |
第2回 | Stereotypes [The making of telling a story / comedy - without using words] - Week 1 builds on the non-verbal communication lesson from Semester 1. However this time, students will mix the ideas of stereotypes and nonverbal communication in groups. | |
第3回 | Stereotypes [The making of telling a story / comedy - without using words] - Week 2 - presentation of story / comedy in groups - feedback will be given in class. | |
第4回 | Culture Shock – [Understanding the Experience] - Engage in role-playing scenarios where students must navigate typical culture shock situations—such as language barriers, unfamiliar social norms. This week will build into the Emotions topic of the following week. | |
第5回 | Emotion - What We Feel - In this session, we focus on the emotions we experience and what triggers them. Students will discuss feelings such as joy, anger, fear, and sadness, and reflect on the situations that evoke these emotions. This session lays the foundation for next week’s focus on communicating stress. | |
第6回 | Stress - How We Communicate Our Feelings - the aim of this week will be to get students to think about how they communicate rather than what -this week is less content focused and more on the actual style and how we communicate and to whom we communicate the stress. | |
第7回 | Appearance - What our appearance communicates to others - Examine how personal appearance, including clothing, and personal style can impact others thinking. The aim is to understand how the choices we make everyday can communicate different messages to people. | |
第8回 | Appearance - Applying and Reflecting on Personal Style - Job Interview style in small groups - First, thinking about what you wear / Second - thinking of what questions / Third - your answers to those questions / Fourth - doing the interview. | |
第9回 | Presentation of Written Communication – Text Language and Acronyms - Explore the evolution and role of text language and acronyms in digital communication. Examine their benefits and pitfalls. A quiz at the start - l8r = later / cu = see you - The aim is that students can understand how people actually message each other in the modern age. | |
第10回 | Presentation of Written Communication – Converting informal messages to formal ones - Learn to adapt informal text language and acronyms for more formal contexts. Students will look at the importance of context in choosing communication styles. |

第11回 | Storytelling and Narrative Techniques - Week 1 - looking at a story. Summarising the story in less than fifty words. Present the story to everyone in a clear and concise way. | |
第12回 | Storytelling and Narrative Techniques - Week 2 - the flipping of the script - Using the story from the previous week - Switching the perspectives on the story -based on the idea that "villains see themselves as heroes." Imagining that you are the villain, and you see yourself as the hero. |

第13回 | Storytelling and Narrative Techniques - Presenting your own version of a story - Imagining that you are the villain, and you see yourself as the hero. During this week students will imagine that they are the heroes of the story, but they will do so from the viewpoint of the villain. | |
第14回 | Final Review - Week 1 - This week students will be given the topic for the final exam. Each one will be explored in groups. The aim is to get multiple perspectives on the same topic heading into exam week. | |
第15回 | Final Review - Week 2 [Review of all content of the course] - At this point students will be given more individual feedback in preparation for the test. (期末試験対策) |
授業外学習の課題 | Students are expected to study for around 4 hours for each class. 1) 2 hours should be spent previewing the material for the next class (e.g. textbook, handouts, internet research). 2) 30 minutes should be spent reviewing notes and materials from the previous class. 2) Two hours should be spent reviewing notes and materials from the previous class. |
履修上の注意事項 | 対面授業を実施します。 英語英文学科で提供している科目については、公認欠席を含め、欠席はいかなる事情があっても4回までとします。 To be successful on this course, students need: 1) good attendance and time keeping. 2) good classwork and homework. 3) good motivation and participation. 公認欠席について: Individual instruction will be provided for students with authorized absences. |
成績評価の方法・基準 | One final exam and other extra activities/ exercises/ assignments, for example, presentations. The grade for the term is composed of: 1) Active Participation (35%) 2) Final Test (40%) 3) Homework (25%) #Absences and Lateness will negatively affect grades. |
