授業の題目 English Communication 1
学修の概要 English Communication I is designed to facilitate growth in students' confidence in how they use the English Language, and to improve their overall ability to interact in English. This course uses communicative approaches to complete tasks that require interaction.
学修の到達目標 Students will be expected to actively participate during class discussions, ask questions, and keenly work on improving their communication skills. The overall aim of this course is to get students to think on their feet, and be able to communicate in different mediums in English.
授業計画 第1回 Orientation [Introduction to the Course/ Ice breaker] - explaining the outline and what is expected of students. This will then be followed up by an ice-breaker to allow students who don't know each other to interact
第2回 Communication [Understanding what communication actually is] Grasping how we use it - The key will be to understanding that it is not just spoken, but in everything we do.
第3回 Communication [Group Presentation] - Students will present the means by which they most often communicate
第4回 Nonverbal communication [Gestures and use of nonverbal communication] - Now that verbal communication has been done, we will look at how we communicate through gestures, words, and how it is done in different cultures.
第5回 Nonverbal communication [Discussion] - A summary of the week before - the doing of non-verbal based activities in the classroom, to show the intricacies of it.
第6回 Perception [Understanding how we perceive the world] Understand how our perceptions are often influenced by external factors.
第7回 Perception [Perception vs truth] Is what we think opinion or is it fact? Group presentations will be done on the same topic, then we will compare the different presentations and see what different perceptions can be gained.
第8回 Talking about Japan [Research] - Research into a Japanese based topic, a list of which will be given in class - in depth analysis will be required for this three week mini-project
第9回 Talking about Japan [Planning and putting ideas together] - collating of information for the three week mini-project
第10回 Talking about Japan [Presentation and final project feedback] -presenting of ideas that students have been working on for the last two weeks.
第11回 Music [Analysis] - - Individual work - students choose music / lyrics - and pull apart the language apart - what is the artist / musician trying to communicate to you?
第12回 Movies [Analysis] - Individual work - students choose a movie - and pull apart the story - what is the director / writer trying to communicate to you?
第13回 Stereotypes [Brainstorming and discussion] - surface level analysis of different stereotypes - will look into representations of stereotypes in pop culture - the in depth part will come in Semesters 3 and 4.
第14回 Review Part 1 in preparation for the Test - a list of potential essay titles will be given this week.
第15回 Review Part 2 in preparation for the Test - Final preparation for the final test which will take place in the following week of class.
授業外学習の課題 Students are expected to study for around 4 hours for each class.
1) 2 hours should be spent previewing the material for the next class (e.g. textbook, handouts, internet research).
2) 2 hours should be spent reviewing notes and materials from the previous class.

履修上の注意事項 対面授業を実施します。
英語英文学科で提供している科目については、公認欠席を含め、欠席はいかなる事情があっても4回までとします。

To be successful on this course, students need:
1) good attendance and time keeping.
2) good classwork and homework.
3) good motivation and participation.
公認欠席について: Individual instruction will be provided for students with authorized absences.
成績評価の方法・基準 There will be one final exam and other extra activities/ exercises/ assignments, for example, presentations.

The grade for the term is composed of:
1) Active Participation (35%)
2) Final Test (40%)
3) Homework (25%)
#Absences/Lateness/Laziness will negatively affect grades.
