学修の概要 | This second semester course will give the student an understanding of important events in modern American business history. First we will look at the nature of coporate America in its historical context. This will inlude a look at the lives and works of various American entrepreneurs who have changed not only business but society and culture. We will also look at the economic crisis of 2007-08 to understand the great power of banks and finance. |
学修の到達目標 | To gain an understanding of American business and society, past and present, and to simultaneously build English language skills, especially for business English. |
授業計画 | 第1回 | 1. Introduction to the rise of modern corporate industrial America in the late 19th century |
第2回 | 2. The modern industrial corporation (American): structure and function- the shape and character of modern corporate America. | |
第3回 | 3. The automobile industry- historical development. The we will look at the various issues related to the electric car and opposition to it by the big three automakers. | |
第4回 | 4. [On-demand/オンデマンド] The 1950's economic history- America as economic super giant. McDonalds. Materials to be provided for reading and watching on-line. | |
第5回 | 5. Business and health issues; the tobacco industry. Also to be studied will be the intersetion of law, media and corpoate America. | |
第6回 | 6. The health care industry/ comparative health care systems: the failure of American health care and what this tell us about American capitalism. | |
第7回 | 7. The shift of global commerce/ new wave globalization. The role of the digital revolution in reshaping the American economy and business world. | |
第8回 | 8. The economic crisis of 2007-8: finance and banking (Lehman Shock). This issue of globalization of finance with its risks and benefits. | |
第9回 | 9. Business and law (civil and criminal law; environmental law); film clips: film, Civil Action. The role of law and government regulation as a way society controls business activities. | |
第10回 | 10. The rise of Silicon Valley; the history of the digital revolution | |
第11回 | 11. New directions in Silicon Valley and IT industry; the future of the digital revolution.[On-demand/オンデマンド] | |
第12回 | 12. Green companies/green industries; the meaning and definiton of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and an evaluation of various corporations as either good or bad social actors. | |
第13回 | 13. Sustainable development and corporate philosophies; mini-test/essay about evaluating a particular U.S. corporation as either good or bad, or a mix of both. | |
第14回 | 14. Economic globalization with special focus on military and defense industries. How is defense a unique industry? | |
第15回 | 15. Test review; historical overview, summary of main themes of the course; Q&A |
授業外学習の課題 | Materials for study will be provided for students by the teacher, either as class hand-outs or links to PDF files. Students are expected to study for around four hours per week out of class. 1) Two hours should be spent previewing the material for the next class (e.g. textbook, handouts, internet research). 2) Two hours should be spent reviewing notes and materials from the previous class. |
履修上の注意事項 | 原則として4回を超えた欠席をした場合、単位は認められません。 また、欠席については事前に連絡をすること。 As a general rule, credits will not be granted if a student is absent more than 4 times. In addition, contact needs to be made in advance of any absences. 英語英文学科で提供している科目については、公認欠席を含め、欠席はいかなる事情があっても4回までとします。 |
成績評価の方法・基準 | Evaluation based a report (40%) and a final exam (40%) and mini-essay (20%) |
