| 学修の概要 | This course is intended for students who want to study abroad in English-speaking countries with an emphasis on North America. This is accomplished in two ways. First, students gather information about the country's social, economic, geographic, and cultural features. Second, students use this knowledge to understand better the written and oral skills necessary to communicate effectively in various social settings. Lastly, students will summarize what they have learned by giving a presentation on a study-abroad location they have chosen. |
| 学修の到達目標 | By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1.) recall basic knowledge related to America and Canada's social, economic, geographic, and cultural features; 2.) effectively communicate oral and written information in English in social settings related to university classes, homestays, and service-related encounters; 3.) investigate and carry out a presentation based on a study-abroad location. |
| 授業計画 | 第１回 | Orientation to study abroad materials- Examining Japan as a gateway to exploring North America. Students will learn common geographic, social, and economic characteristics that their hometowns and Japan share with Canada and the United States. |
| 第２回 | An overview of Canada- Understanding the country's major geographic and economic features. Through a series of worksheets, students will identify and label important information and examine the reasons behind its relevance. | |
| 第３回 | An overview of Canada's major cultural and societal features. Through a series of content videos, students will learn basic knowledge about how Canadian society and culture have been shaped over its history. | |
| 第４回 | An overview of America- Understanding the country's major geographic and economic features. Through a series of worksheets, students will identify and label important information and examine the reasons behind its relevance. | |
| 第５回 | An overview of America's major cultural and societal features. Through a series of content videos, students will learn basic knowledge about how American society and culture have been shaped over its history.(This class is On-demand) | |
| 第６回 | Gaining further speaking, listening, and reading practice through various social settings that study-abroad students encounter. Students will practice their understanding of multiple dialogues set in a classroom, at a homestay, or a service encounter in North America. | |
| 第７回 | Review practice and presentation of the student's chosen study-abroad location. Students work together to confirm that the data they have input, as well as the structure of their presentations, are correct. | |
| 第８回 | Review summary based on presentation of the overseas location that has been researched. Students will better understand how well they researched the content of their final presentation based on feedback from their classmates and teacher. | |

| 授業外学習の課題 | Students should make every effort to: 1.) Using English as much as possible. 2.) Practicing effective time management. 3.) Always reviewing the last class and previewing the next class (spend 3-4 hours per week of study time outside of class). 4.) Use the study time to focus on assigned readings, homework, research, and skills practice. |
| 履修上の注意事項 | To succeed in this course, you need to: 1.) Register by "Web Entry." Up to 24 students will be accepted into the course. 2.) Attend and actively participate in all classes. 3.) Be aware that no negative evaluation will be given due to authorized absences. 4.) Know that you will receive no course credits if you have over three unauthorized absences. 5.) Contact the teacher to make up for missed class materials, quizzes, or presentations if absent. |
