授業の題目 | Multicultural Project: Popular Music in Modern Japanese Society II |
学修の概要 | This is the second of a two-course series that examines society in Japan through its popular music from the Meiji Restoration to the end of the 20th century. This second course will focus on selected events and trends in Japanese society from the post-WWII Occupation to the 1990s as well as on the diverse styles of popular musical expression that have emerged in the same period. (*It is recommended, but not required, for students to have taken the first course in order to take this second course.) |
学修の到達目標 | By the end of the course, students will have learned (or reviewed) in English some key events and trends from 1945 to circa 1990. At the same time, they will have had the chance to compare how more recent generational groups including their grandparents', parents' and their own have expressed their thoughts and emotions through song. As the final project, students in small teams will prepare and deliver a presentation on an approved topic of their choice and lead an informal class discussion thereafter. |
授業計画 | 第1回 | -Course Introduction -Introduction to the course content: Where did "J-pop" come from? *Students will be able to understand the course objectives, content and expectations and find out a little about their international classmages and their interests in Japanese history or music. |
第2回 | -Review Game: Pre-1945 Japanese Society and Popular Music in a flash! *As necessary background information for this course,students will be able to familiarize themselves with the society of Meiji to WWII Japan and its various music genres. |

第6回 | -Historical Overview: the World and Japan in the 1960s THIS WILL BE AN ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE LESSON -Students will be able to learn (or review in English) the major trends and events of the Sixties in most Western societies and how they influenced Japanese life. |

第7回 | -Society and popular music in 1960s Japan ①: 60s Kayo and Enka, College Folk Songs *Students will be able to connect what they learned from previous lessons to these music genres, their characteristics and significance for the people, as well as be introduced to representative creators, performers and songs of these genres. |

第11回 | -Society and popular music in 1970s Japan ②: Song Contests and Idols *Students will be able to connect what they learned from previous lessons to these trends, their characteristics and significance for the people, as well as be introduced to representative creators, performers and songs from this period. |

第13回 | -Society and popular music in 1980s Japan: The Rise of "City Pop" *Students will be able to connect what they learned from previous lessons to this music style and its characteristics, as well as be introduced to its representative creators, performers and songs that are still popular around the world. |

第14回 | -Society and popular music in 1990s Japan: The Birth of "J-Pop" *Students will be able to understand how "J-Pop" came to include a wide array of songs that contain elements of both global and Japanese influences. |

第15回 | -Team Presentations, Q&A and feedback *Students will serve as audience and peer commentators for their group presentations posted on the online bulletin board "Padlet". -Summary and Reflection |
授業外学習の課題 | You will be expected to spend at least 240 minutes between sessions on average: -completing reading, music listening, and video-viewing assignments for the next class. -reviewing previous lesson handouts and notes. -doing any necessary language learning (e.g. vocabulary) to use in class discussions. -searching for, and listening to, additional music available on YouTube etc. for each music genre. -completing your Fianl Team Presentation mainly outside of class time. |
履修上の注意事項 | IMPORTANT!! You MUST read this BEFORE you decide to register for this course. 1. Domestic students MUST have at least TOEIC 500, TOEIC Bridge 80 or EIKEN 2 to take this course. Classes will be conducted almost entirely in English. 2. The maximum class size for domestic students is 16 ( + international students). 3. You will be expected to use mainly English as the language communication in this class. 5. Google Classroom will be used for most handouts, listening materials and assignments. 6. You will need access to a computer and a stable Internet connection at home as well. 6. After registration, you will receive a Google Classroom invitation. Please join. 7. Credits for this course will normally not be given if you are absent more than 4 times. 9. 公認欠席については欠席として扱いますが、単位認定要件には影響しないよう配慮します。小テスト時に公認欠席となった場合は、代替措置にて対応します。ただし、プレゼンテーションはグループでのコラボ作業のため、どのような欠席の場合でも、他のメンバーとの連携は責任を持って行ってください。 (The weekly plan may be adjusted depending on variables such as class size and the language proficiency levels of the registered students.) |
