授業の題目 | Multicultural Project: Popular Music in Modern Japanese Society I |
学修の概要 | This is the first of a two-course series that examines popular music in Japan from the Meiji Restoration to the late 20th century. This first course will focus on the major events and trends that had shaped and reshaped Japanese society from the 1860s to the end of World War II as well as the genres of popular music that were born during these turbulent 80 years of the nation's history of modernization. Please note that this course will be given almost entirely in English. |
学修の到達目標 | By the end of the course, successful students will be able to: 1. Identify and explain (in English) some key events and trends of the Meiji, Taisho and roughly the first third of the Showa period. 2. Learn and appreciate the various genres and styles of songs that have emerged over these decades and the special roles they played in Japanese society. 3. Consolidate and deliver their understanding of class materials and additional research, in a final project on an approved topic of their choice, with students from other cultures in small, mixed teams. |

第2回 | -What was Japanese society and "popular music" like in pre-Meiji Japan? *As necessary background information for this course, students will be able to familiarize themselves with Edo-era rural and urban society as well as their popular music genres and instruments. |

第13回 | -Society and Popular Music in Wartime Showa Japan : Senji Kayo, WWII Gunka *Students will be able to connect what they learned from previous lessons to this music genre, its significance,characteristics,and representative music creators and performers. |

授業外学習の課題 | You will be expected to spend at least 240 minutes between sessions on average: -completing reading, music listening, and video-watching assignments for the next class, -reviewing previous lesson handouts and notes, -doing any necessary language learning (vocabulary etc.) to use in class discussions, -searching for,and listening to, additional music available on YouTube etc. for each music genre. -completing your Final Team Presentation mainly outside of class time. |
履修上の注意事項 | IMPORTANT!! You MUST read this BEFORE you decide to register for this course. All sessions will be held in the classroom. 1. Domestic students must have at least TOEIC 500+, TOEIC Bridge 80+ or EIKEN 2 to take this course. They are reminded that classes will be conducted almost entirely in English. 2. The maximum class size for domestic students is 16 (+ international students). 3. You will be expected to use mainly English as the language of communication in this class. 4. Google Classroom will be used for most handouts, listening materials and assignments. 5. You will need access to a computer and a stable Internet connection at home as well. 6. After registration, you will receive a Google Classroom invitation. Please join. 7. In principle, credits for this course will not be given if you miss more than 4 sessions. (Note: The weekly plan may be adjusted depending on variables such as class size and the language proficiency levels of the registered students.) 尚、公認欠席については欠席として扱いますが、単位認定要件には影響しないよう配慮します。小テスト時に公認欠席となった場合は、代替措置にて対応します。ただし、プレゼンテーションはグループでのコラボ作業のため、どのような欠席の場合でも、他のメンバーとの連絡は責任を持って行ってください。 |
