学修の概要 | This course focuses on communication skills for oral presentations and strategies to build effective speeches used for real-life and academic purposes. The course aims outline the general goals for the course. The course objectives describe the learning targets for class participants. These are stated in general terms to provide flexibility in topics and themes according to the learner needs assessments and professional and academic research interests. '[Instructor's practical experience: For over 10 years engaged in training, sales & marketing in packaged goods companies in Canada, business English training in Japan for Nestle, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Kawasaki, Nihon Felt (Ambic), & Nippon Boehringer Ingelheim, and academic presentations to international audiences in over 10 countries ] |
学修の到達目標 | The course aims are: (a) to develop communication skills for effective speech delivery for authentic purposes, (b) to introduce strategies focused on analyzing and developing the content of the message, and (c) to improve techniques and build confidence in oral presentations through the experience of practice, self-assessment, and peer feedback. Students will be able to: (1) apply non-verbal communication, voice, and rhetorical structure for different types of appeals; (2) understand the structure of presentations from opening gambits, to transitions in the main body, & on to a summary or conclusion; (3) think critically to decide about content, organization, and the audience needs in developing speeches; (4) develop effective visuals to support ideas and language for proposal, promotion, academic, & team presentations; and (5) critically evaluate the presentations of peers and their own against good presentation standards |

授業外学習の課題 | This partially "flipped" class approach involves out-of-class work (2 hours) on weekly assignments and for preparation & practice of presentations with in-class skill reviews & speech performances. To accommodate personalized learning needs, there is an independent self-study project to be completed outside of class (2 hours) as a lifelong learning exercise to address specific areas of professional and academic research interests. |
履修上の注意事項 | In class activities focus on: (1) a review of the out-of-class preparation and model presentation analysis from the DVD, (2) conducting an audience analysis in pairs or small group interactions, (3) listening to the presentation focus and communication skills for the target presentation type, (4) a storyboard workshop to outline a presentation, and (5) oral presentation performances & feedback. Support materials and class contents and assignment deadlines will be posted in Google Classroom. (*Please have access to a dictionary.) 成績評価の方法・基準 | Weekly preparation of presentation analyses 10%, 3 knowledge review tests on the metalanguage and concepts 20%, oral presentations and speeches 45%, an independent self-study project 15%, active participation in class 10% |
