授業の題目 | Public Speaking and Presentation |
学修の概要 | This is a performance-based course that focuses on public speaking and presentation skills. Students will learn the content, organization, and delivery behind three speeches: self-introduction, persuasive, and reflection. They will also learn how to use visual aids, where appropriate, to enhance the overall effectiveness of their presentations. Besides public speaking and presentation skills, there is also an emphasis on engaging the audience through follow-up questions and summarizing what others have said. |
学修の到達目標 | By the end of this course, students should be able to expand upon their presentation knowledge through the use of appropriate language, body gestures, and voice projection. This will give them the confidence to interact successfully in various public settings. In addition, they will refine their PowerPoint presentation skills further and analyze the presentations made by others. |
授業計画 | 第1回 | Introduction to the class goals and syllabus. Students analyze their past presentation performances/experiences to uncover their existing challenges and successes. |
第2回 | Warm-up presentation: A self-introduction. Students gain information by brainstorming relevant information from their personal lives. | |
第3回 | Techniques and activities related to giving a self-introduction speech. Students refine their knowledge of presenting this type of speech in front of an audience. | |
第4回 | Assignment-in-class presentation on a self-introduction. Students present their presentations in front of others. Classmates and the teacher provide feedback to enhance future improvement. | |
第5回 | Presentation: A Persuasive Speech/A Prized Possession. Students gain content about this speech by examining relevant information based on their personal experiences. | |
第6回 | Presentation: A Persuasive Speech/A Prized Possession. Students examine several case studies to understand better the depth and scope required for this kind of speech. | |
第7回 | Presentation: A Persuasive Speech/A Prized Possession. Students expand and refine their knowledge on presentation delivery techniques focusing on voice and body language. | |
第8回 | Assignment-in-class presentations on a Prized Possession. Students present their research in front of others. Students better understand how to incorporate the knowledge required for this kind of speech in front of a live audience. | |
第9回 | Feedback on the presentations: Classmates and the teacher provide feedback on the Prized Possession presentations to enhance future improvement. | |
第10回 | Presentation: A Reflection Speech/A Memorable Experience. Students gain content about this speech by examining relevant information based on their personal experiences(On demand). | |

第12回 | Presentation: A Reflection Speech/A Memorable Experience. Students expand and refine their knowledge on how to ask follow-up questions and summarize for understanding within a presentation (On demand). | |
第13回 | Presentation: A Reflection Speech/A Memorable Experience. Students make critical adjustments on how to better practice, and refine the content of their speeches. | |
第14回 | Assignment-in-class presentations on a Memorable Experience. Students present their research in front of others. Students better understand how to incorporate the knowledge required for this kind of speech in front of a live audience. | |
第15回 | Feedback on the presentations: Classmates and the teacher provide feedback on the Memorable Experience presentations to enhance future improvement. |
授業外学習の課題 | Students should make every effort to: 1.) Using English as much as possible 2.) Practicing effective time management 3.) Always reviewing and previewing their coursework (spend 3-4 hours of study time outside of class). 4.) Use the study time to focus on assigned readings, homework, research, and skills practice. |
履修上の注意事項 | *IMPORTANT: This course is open to students who are placed in levels 3 and 4 *Up to 24 students will be accepted into the course *Actively participate and attend all classes. *No negative evaluation will be given due to authorized absences. *If you have over 5 unauthorized absences, you will not receive credit for this course. *If absent, you must contact the teacher to make up for missed class materials, quizzes, or presentations. |
