授業題目 Introduction to Public Speaking
授業の概要 This course is designed for students who want to learn basic public speaking and presentation skills. To accomplish this, students will practice the foundational concepts used for self-introduction, information, and demonstration speeches. Besides learning the content and organizational structures of these speeches, a heavy emphasis will be placed on acquiring delivery techniques related to voice inflection, gestures, and body language. Lastly, students will learn where to use visual slides in their presentations as well as understand how to ask and answer basic follow-up questions.
学習の到達目標 By the end of this course, students should be able to provide basic presentation content using proven techniques that will allow them greater confidence in interacting in an international environment. In addition, they will be able to create PowerPoint presentations that are easy to follow and analyze the presentations given by others. This greater ability enables them to distinguish the qualities of a good presentation.
授業計画 第1回 Introduction to the class goals and syllabus. Students analyze the challenges and successes they faced in their past presentations.
第2回 Warm-up presentation: A self-introduction. Students gain information by examining relevant information from their personal lives. This is accomplished by learning basic brainstorming techniques.
第3回 Skills and activities related to giving a self-introduction speech. Students learn basic techniques through video practice on how to present in front of an audience.
第4回 A self-introduction presentation. Students are given time to practice and present their research in front of others. Classmates and the teacher provide feedback.
第5回 Presentation: An Information Speech/A Favorite Place. Students gather content about this speech by examining relevant information based on their personal experiences.
第6回 Presentation: An Information Speech/A Favorite Place. Students examine several case studies to better understand the depth and scope required for this kind of speech (On demand).
第7回 Presentation: An Information Speech/A Favorite Place. Students gain further knowledge on basic presentation delivery techniques focusing on voice stress, volume, and pausing. In addition, students learn a list of basic follow-up questions.
第8回 Assignment-in-class presentations on a Favorite Place. Students present their research in front of others. Students gain a better understanding on how to incorporate the knowledge required for this kind of speech in front of a live audience.
第9回 Feedback on the presentations: Classmates and the teacher provide feedback on the Favorite Place presentations to enhance future improvement.
第10回 Presentation: A Demonstration Speech. Students gain content about this speech by examining relevant information based on their personal experiences.
第11回 Presentation: A Demonstration Speech. Students examine several case studies to better understand the depth and scope required for this kind of speech.
第12回 Presentation: A Demonstration Speech. Students add to their basic presentation delivery techniques by focusing on gestures, body posture, and slide layouts.
第13回 Presentation: A Demonstration Speech. Students make critical adjustments on how to better practice and refine the content of their speeches.
第14回 Assignment-in-class presentations on a Demonstration. Students present their research in front of others. Students better understand how to incorporate the knowledge required for this kind of speech in front of a live audience.
第15回 Feedback on the presentations: Classmates and the teacher provide feedback on the Demonstration presentations to enhance future improvement.
授業外学習の課題 Students should make every effort to:
1.) Using English as much as possible
2.) Practicing effective time management
3.) Always reviewing and previewing their work (spend 3-4 hours of study time outside of class).
4.) Use the study time to focus on assigned readings, homework, research, and skills practice.
履修上の注意事項 *IMPORTANT: This course is open only to students who are placed in levels 1 and 2
*Up to 24 students will be accepted into the course
*Actively participate and attend all classes.
*No negative evaluation will be given due to authorized absences.
*If you have over 5 unauthorized absences, you will not receive credit for this course.
*If absent, you must contact the teacher to make up for missed class materials, quizzes, or presentations.
成績評価の方法・基準 The grade is composed of the following:
1.) Homework/Assignment-30%
2.) Presentations-40%
3.) Active Participation-30%
テキスト All materials such as homework, readings, tests will be provided online through Google Classroom.
