授業題目 | Vocabulary I: Understanding and Describing Vocabulary |
授業の概要 | We will begin by investigating the history of words in the English language. As we do this, we will look at types or aspects of words: meaning, syntax, collocation, spelling, pronunciation, register and variety. We will also look at issues relating to idioms, phrases and other multi-word units, word associations and culture, and special types of vocabulary such as slang or technical language. Finally, we will look at how dictionaries are made today, and how they show or illustrate different aspects of words. |
学習の到達目標 | One area of learner development will be the application of what we learn about English to Japanese. We will also learn through reading original academic texts in specialised areas. |
