授業題目 Multicultural Project: Japanese Culture in Hospitality and Service
授業の概要 It is often said that the quality of Japanese hospitality and service is, in itself, an appealing point for travellers to this country. If it is indeed so, what makes it so? In this course, we will explore some historical factors and cultural concepts that clearly encourage each generation of Japanese service professionals to maintain certain practices and standards. We will also look at some challenges involved in adapting these practices to changing times and to customers and guests with different cultural backgrounds. This course is especially recommended for both Japanese and international students with an interest in pursuing a career in guest (customer) service or managing / training those who do.
学習の到達目標 This is a course designed for active participation by both international and Japanese students. By the end of the course, successful students will have gained sufficient understanding of the more abstract cultural concepts underlying the Japanese "spirit" of hospitality ("omotenashi")and service and be able to talk/write about them in their own words. They will also be able to find concrete examples of such concepts in their own travel, part-time work experience and daily life. As a final project, students in small teams with prepare and deliver a presentation on an approved topic of their choice and also lead a post-presentation discussion on it.
