授業の概要 | In this course, students will practice and improve their ability to discuss various topics on social issues by expressing and supporting their opinions in English. Discussion strategies will be introduced and practiced in pairs, roleplays, and small group discussions and then will be applied in student led discussions on real world stories and in a debate. |
学習の到達目標 | Course objectives are to develop the knowledge of discussion strategies and to build the skills and confident attitude to engage in discussions and debates on social topics of interest through actual practice in using the language. Students will be able to negotiate for meaning in communication breakdowns and express their point of view with support to agree or disagree with the arguments made by others. |

授業外学習の課題 | Students should use the online weekly homework to review the vocabulary from the previous unit to consolidate language learning for use in discussions and preview the expressions in the next unit. Students should prepare current event portfolios weekly to bring real social issues for class discussions & should complete self-study project work outside of class. |
履修上の注意事項 | Students will be expected to participate actively in class activities with pair work, group work, and discussions & debates on social issues of interest. 1) Please arrive on time, attend all lessons (limit absenteeism), & participate actively in this class taught in English, face-to-face on campus.対面 2) If you will be absent, please inform your instructor in advance and check with classmates to find out a) what was covered, b) the homework, & c) what to prepare for next class. 【この科目はレベル3以上の学生のみ履修可能です。】 |
成績評価の方法・基準 | Ongoing assessments will be based on student led discussions 25%, a debate 20%, 1 independent study term project 20%, 1 current events portfolio 15%, weekly H/W online 10%, & active participation in class 10%. |
