授業題目 Cross-Cultural Communication
授業の概要 What do we need to know, and be able to do, in order to communicate more easily and get along better with people from other cultures? That may be a key question asked by so many people in the world today, including world leaders. We may first think of “language” (as in “speak fluent English”). While that, too, may be useful, it is clearly not enough by itself. In this course, we will explore some basic concepts in intercultural communication and “hidden culture” and begin using them to help us understand others and ourselves, both as “groups of people from different environments” and “individuals with our very own personalities.” Classes will be taught mainly in (easier) English, but also in Japanese whenever necessary.
学習の到達目標 By the end of this course, successful students will have gained a good basic understanding of the dimensions of intercultural communication as listed below, improved their skills and confidence in sharing tasks and ideas with classmates (in English), and begun using what they have learned in their interactions with students at an overseas partner university. While English language will rarely be taught directly in this course, points for learning are woven into each activity. Students will be guided and supported toward making personal progress, particularly in listening comprehension, speaking, and vocabulary learning.
