授業題目 英語研究特講(American English and Movies)
授業の概要 In this class, we will watch a film called Dead Poets Society, and read most of the screenplay while working our way through a textbook based on the film, in order to help students maintain and improve their current level of English. If possible, we will also watch three other movies related to the same theme (Unconventional Teachers) in order to deepen students' understanding of American society at the time period depicted in the film and how it might be related to today's world. This course should be of special interest to students hoping to become teachers in the future.
学習の到達目標 In this course, you will learn many new vocabulary terms, how to study independently, and how to critically approach history, literature and film.

Your learning outcome will be determined by the amount of time and effort you put into studying each week. The instructor hopes this will be an enjoyable, challenging class, in which students can learn more about education in the USA, improve their English skills, and prepare for higher-level discussion and research in seminar (zemi).

You should spend two hours per week reviewing old material and two additional hours preparing for the next class with new material.
授業計画 第1回 Week 1 Introduction & Orientation; course expectations; possible discussion of some questions on teaching, learning and education in general; begin first additional movie, Mona Lisa Smile (if conditions allow us, this and every week).
第2回 Week 2 Textbook Unit 1 (with scenes from Dead Poets Society (今を生きる), each week: therefore, you MUST have access to this movie, either online/downloaded or on DVD); continue Mona Lisa Smile.

第8回 Week 8 Midterm textbook check; textbook Unit 7; continue Mr. Holland's Opus.
第9回 Week 9 Textbook Unit 8; continue Mr. Holland's Opus.
第10回 Week 10 Textbook Unit 9; finish Mr. Holland's Opus; class discussion.

第12回 Week 12 Textbook Unit 11; continue Lean on Me.
第13回 Week 13 Textbook Unit 12; continue Lean on Me.

第15回 Week 15 (to be taught online/by email) Textbook Unit 14; finish Lean on Me; Course Summary; Response Paper #3 due one week after final class (by email).
授業外学習の課題 Each week, review the last class and preview the next class (at least 2 hours).

The main movie for this class is called Dead Poets Society (in Japanese, 今を生きる). The textbook and most of our in-class activities are connected to this movie, so in case you miss a class session, or if we have to teach online and you must study from your home, then you must have access to this movie. If you can watch it online (streaming, for example) or if you can rent it or buy it on DVD, then you can follow the textbook and the lessons. If you cannot access this movie, either online or in DVD format, it will not be possible to complete the work (in the case of online teaching). Please consider this when enrolling in this class.
履修上の注意事項 The loss of 1 class (90 minutes) will be made up by online/email assignments, particularly in the final 2 weeks of the course (weeks 13 and 14). Depending on the situation, we may use Flipgrid to upload video responses or the instructor may ask students to write answers to questions or a short report to be submitted by email.

The course schedule and film screenings/scenes are tentative and subject to change.
成績評価の方法・基準 This may be changed; however, tentatively, your grade will be based on:

(1) In-class and/or online activities = 50%
(2) Response Papers (includes possible Flipgrid videos/online assignments) = 25%
(4) Completed Textbook Assignments (submitted by email) = 25%
テキスト Required text:

Tanaka, Honda, Yamamoto, Rowlett and Nakagaki. Dead Poets Society 映画総合教材「いまを生きる」. Tsurumi Shoten. ISBN-13: 978-4-7553-0368-5.

Available for purchase from the university co-op bookstore (Seikyo).

Also, you must be able to obtain a copy of the main film for this class, Dead Poets Society (今を生きる), either streaming/downloadable or on DVD, in case we have to teach any part of this course online/remotely. Not having access to this movie will make using the textbook and completing the main coursework impossible.
