授業題目 Discussion and Presentation
授業の概要 This course is designed to improve the overall English language abilities of students with a primary focus on developing their speaking and listening skills. Students in this class will work to improve these skills as they tackle controversial topics on a wide range of important and timely subjects. In this course we will confront important problems that the world faces today. We will work to develop informed opinions on these problems, and to be able to communicate our opinions to others effectively. To that end, we will be focusing on developing critical thinking skills, effective discussion and presentation skills, among others.
学習の到達目標 The aim of this course is to develop students' abilities to actively join in discussions and to deliver effective presentations on a variety of challenging topics.
①To improve general English speaking and listening skills.
②To develop opinions on timely topics.
③To communicate/present opinions in a clear and persuasive manner to others.
授業計画 第1回 1 Eating Well 
In class: Read and practice dialogue on topic. Discuss both sides of the issue. Review additional information. All students present their opinions, or positions, on the topic. (90 minutes)
Preparation for next week: Text reading (30 minutes); write answers to comprehension questions (30 minutes); data analysis (20 minutes); write personal position paragraph (20 minutes)

All remaining classes will follow the same format, with different topics, as indicated below.

Summary and review of course provided by instructor (20 minutes).
Each student presents a 3 to 5 minute presentation stating their position on any one of the topics discussed earlier in the course (up to 70 minutes, as necessary).
授業外学習の課題 These are the 3 expectations of EVERY student on this course:
1) Use English as much as possible
2) Have good attendance & good time-keeping
3) Always come to class fully prepared to discuss the day's topic
履修上の注意事項 To be successful in this course students need:
1) good attendance & time keeping.
2) good classwork and homework.
3) good motivation and participation.

欠席はいかなる事情があっても4回までとする。
病気、交通機関の乱れ、冠婚葬祭等、一切の事情を含める。
Credit will not be given if students are absent from class more than four times in one semester (including illness, traffic-related problems, family-related matters, etc.).
成績評価の方法・基準 The grade for the semester is composed of:
1) Successful completion of all homework assignments, and in-class presentations (50%)
2) Successful completion of a final presentation or examination (50%)
*Lateness and absences will negatively affect grades.
*If a student is absent from a class, it is the student's responsibility to contact a classmate or the teacher to find out about the classwork/homework.
テキスト No textbook is required. Materials will be provided in class.
