授業題目 Multicultural Project: Popular Music in Modern Japanese Society I
授業の概要 This is the first of a two-course series that examines popular music in Japan from the Meiji Restoration to today. This first course will focus on the major events and trends that had shaped and reshaped Japanese society from the 1860s to the 1950s as well as the genres of popular music that were born during these turbulent 90 years of the nation's history of modernization.
学習の到達目標 By the end of the course, all students will have learned (or reviewed) in English some key events and trends of the Meiji, Taisho and roughly the first half of the Showa period. At the same time, they will have explored the various styles of songs that have merged over these decades and of which many clearly had a special role or purpose to play in society. As the final project, students in small teams will prepare and deliver a presentation on an approved topic of their choice and lead a post-presentation class discussion.
