| 授業の概要 | What do we need to know, and be able to do, in order to communicate more easily and get along better with people from other cultures? That may be a key question asked by so many people in the world today, including world leaders. We may first think of “language” (as in “speak fluent English”). While that, too, may be useful, it is clearly not enough by itself. In this course, we will explore some basic concepts in intercultural communication and “hidden culture” and begin using them to help us understand others and ourselves, both as “groups of people from different environments” and “individuals with our very own personalities.” Classes will be taught mainly in (easier) English, but also in Japanese whenever necessary. |
| 学習の到達目標 | The objectives of this course are for students to gain a basic understanding of the dimensions of intercultural communication as listed below, to develop their skills and confidence in sharing tasks and ideas with classmates, and begin using what they have learned in their interactions with international students on campus. While English language will rarely be taught directly in this course, points for learning are woven into each activity. Students will be guided and supported toward making personal progress, particularly in listening comprehension, speaking, and vocabulary learning. |

| 授業外学習の課題 | Students will be expected to: -complete weekly assignments to the best of their ability -come to class prepared for quizzes, Q&A and activities -prepare for their final presentations mostly outside of class time. Students should be prepared to spend at least 60 minutes between sessions for review, preparation and assignments. Several additional hours will be required to prepare for their Team Presentation at the end of the course. |
| 履修上の注意事項 | STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BE IN ENGLISH LEVEL 2 OR 3 TO TAKE THIS COURSE. 1. Come to class every time. 2. There will be a quiz on the second session of most topics. 3. 5 absences = NO CREDIT, NO EXCEPTIONS 4. Be an active listener and speaker. Ask questions and offer your answers and ideas. 5. Do and hand in your assignments on time. 6. Up to 20 students will be accepted in this class. (Please note: The weekly lesson plan above may be adjusted depending on actual class size and the language proficiencies of the students.) IMPORTANT: Registration for this course must be done at the beginning of the semester (in April).
