授業題目 Social English: Developing English Skills for Social Purposes
授業の概要 We use language for many purposes: business, leisure, education, research, entertainment, and many other purposes. This course focuses on the development of ability to use spoken English in social situations: the language of social interaction.
学習の到達目標 Planning in groups, initiating conversation, dealing with issues, investigating language needs, reporting and presenting in English are all aspects of this course.
授業計画 第1回 About Social English - Sociable English! Clarification language. Finding things in common.
第2回 "Catch-up" conversations, small talk, .
Social project planning in English: making teams, choosing together, keeping in touch.
第3回 Brainstorming ideas; making an invitation, accepting an invitation.
Our social projects: the English we need, deciding details. Choosing, planning.
第4回 Our social projects: telling how they are proceeding. Explaining, making excuses.
第5回 Making a suggestion, giving, accepting and refusing invitations.
第6回 Social project presentations, and giving feedback. Cheering each other up!
第7回 Changing the topic, giving and receiving compliments. Submit social project reports.
Making new social project teams, and sharing ideas.
第8回 Preparing the listener, asking for and giving permission. Sharing embarrassing stories!
Social project teams: making decisions, making plans.
第9回 Making a request, asking for and giving advice.
Telling or asking about experiences abroad.
第10回 Social project updates: telling what you are doing.
Sharing funny stories, making, accepting, or refusing an offer
第11回 Feedback review.
Personal questions: how to make them, how to respond.

授業外学習の課題 Finding, investigating, and participating in social events outside class or outside the university is part of this course. Between two and five hours per week.
履修上の注意事項 欠席は3回までとする。ただし、事前あるいは直後に授業担当教員に連絡を取り、欠席中の授業内容や課題を把握した場合、4回の欠席まで認める。それ以外の場合、欠席4回の学生にはこの科目の単位が与えられない。

Basically, students may be absent up to three times in one term. However, if they make a point of contacting their teacher before or soon after the absence each time, to learn what they missed or what they should do, then they will be allowed to be absent up to four times. If not, four absences means that they will not receive credits for the course.
